Here are the four LOIS Search Tasks that were used to collect data from our participants. The tasks are based on real-life scenarios and portrait situations in which knowledge is required to formulate advice for a friend on relevant and complex issues related to health and the environment.
TASK 1: Vegan diet (closed)
[ENG] Your friend Anna is worried because her younger sister has decided to become a vegan. Anna thinks that this could be a good choice from an ethical point of view, both for the body and the environment – but her sister is only 13 years old… Isn’t it too soon? Besides, her sister already suffers from asthma and this health condition makes her weaker. Opinions are divided: some argue that vegan food is healthy, others do not. What is the truth? Would a vegetarian diet be healthy for a 13-year-old girl? What advice would you give Anna? And what would you base yourself on?
[ITA] La tua amica Anna è preoccupata perché sua sorella minore ha deciso di diventare vegana. La tua amica pensa che questa potrebbe essere buona scelta da un punto di vista etico, sia per il corpo, sia per l’ambiente – ma sua sorella ha solo 13 anni… Non è troppo presto? Inoltre la sorella soffre già di asma e questa sua condizione di salute la rende più debole. Le opinioni sono divergenti: alcuni sostengono che l’alimentazione vegana sia salutare, altri no. Qual è la verità? Una dieta a base vegetale sarebbe salutare per una ragazza di 13 anni? Che consiglio daresti ad Anna? E su che cosa ti baseresti?
[DEU] Deine Freundin Anna ist besorgt, weil ihre jüngere Schwester entschieden hat, vegan zu werden. Anna denkt, dass dies aus ethischer Sicht eine gute Entscheidung sein könnte, sowohl für den Körper als auch für die Umwelt – aber ihre Schwester ist erst 13 Jahre alt… Ist das nicht zu früh? Zudem leidet ihre Schwester an Asthma, was ihren Gesundheitszustand schwächt. Die Meinungen gehen auseinander: Die einen sagen, dass vegane Ernährung gesund ist, die anderen sagen das Gegenteil. Was ist die Wahrheit? Wäre eine vegane Ernährung für ein 13-jähriges Mädchen gesund? Welchen Rat würdest du Anna geben? Und worauf würdest du dich dabei stützen?
TASK 2: Two wheels (open)
[ENG] Your friend Marcello asked you for advice. Since he proved to be very responsible during the lockdown period, his parents decided to reward him with a great gift of “independence”: a 2-wheeled means of transport to travel to school (but not only!) and avoid public transport. He can choose between a motorcycle (50 cc), a nice bike, an e-bike or even an electric scooter. A friend of yours already has a motorcycle and suggested him to get a scooter. According to his parents, however, it would be safer to bay the bike or e-bike, as you can use the bike paths. Many people consider the e-bike a more ecological choice; moreover, if he takes an e-bike, he won’t have to worry about getting gas and therefore won’t waste his pocket money! However, it’s a bit lazier than a nice old-style pedal bike… There’s also the question of money: Marcello doesn’t want to ask his parents something too out of budget… What would you advise him to buy and why?
[ITA] Riaprono le scuole e i negozi! Il tuo amico Marcello ti ha chiesto un consiglio. Dato che si è dimostrato molto responsabile durante il periodo di isolamento, i suoi genitori hanno deciso di premiarlo con un grande dono di “indipendenza”: un mezzo di trasporto a 2 ruote per percorrere il tragitto casa-scuola (ma non solo!) ed evitare di dover prendere l’autobus. Può scegliere tra una moto (50 cc), una bella bici, una e-bike o anche un monopattino elettrico. Un ragazzo della vostra compagnia ha già una moto e gli ha suggerito di farsi regalare un cinquantino. Secondo i suoi genitori, invece, sarebbe più sicuro prendere la bici o l’e-bike, poiché è possibile utilizzare le piste ciclabili. In molti considerano l’e-bike una scelta più ecologica; inoltre, se prende una e-bike, non dovrà preoccuparsi di fare benzina e quindi non sprecherà la sua paghetta! Tuttavia è un po’ più da sfaticati rispetto a una bella bici a pedali… C’è anche la questione dei soldi: Marcello non vuole chiede ai suoi qualcosa troppo fuori budget… Cosa gli consiglieresti di acquistare e perché?
[DEU] Dein Freund Marcello hat dich um einen Rat gefragt. Da er sich während des Lockdowns sehr verantwortungsbewusst erwiesen hat, haben seine Eltern beschlossen, ihn mit einem grossen Geschenk der “Unabhängigkeit” zu belohnen: ein zweirädriges Transportmittel um den Schulweg zurückzulegen (aber nicht nur!), ohne den Bus nehmen zu müssen. Er kann zwischen einem Motorrad (50er), einem schönen Fahrrad, einem E-Bike oder sogar einem Elektroroller wählen. Ein Freund aus deiner Gruppe hat bereits ein Motorrad, und hat ihm empfohlen sich ein 50er Motorrad schenken zu lassen. Nach der Meinung von Marcellos Eltern wäre es sicherer, das Fahrrad oder E-Bike zu nehmen, weil man damit die Velowege benutzen kann. Viele sehen heute das E-Bike als die ökologischste Option; wer ein E-Bike hat muss auch nicht tanken und spart so Geld. Allerdings ist das E-Bike auch eher etwas für faule im Vergleich zu einem schönen klassischen Velo. Und auch das Geld spielt eine Rolle, Marcello möchte seine Eltern nicht um etwas bitten, das zu teuer ist… Motorrad, Fahrrad, E-Bike, Elektroroller: was würdest du ihm raten zu kaufen und warum?
TASK 3: Basil (closed)
[ENG] Your friend Giuseppe comes from Liguria and really enjoys eating good food: every time he goes home in the Cinqueterre, his grandmother fills him with jars of homemade Ligurian pesto made with home-grown basil, and he happily shares it with you. Giuseppe has invited you to a lunch of pesto pasta with Carlo, another friend of yours. Carlo called you: he is quite worried because he has heard that basil is toxic and doesn’t know what to do about the meal invitation with Giuseppe. Moreover, he is worried about Giuseppe’s health, as he eats pesto at least once a day. What do you advise to do? Should Giuseppe worry about his health?
[ITA] Il tuo amico Giuseppe viene dalla Liguria ed è una buona forchetta: sua nonna, ogni volta che Giuseppe torna a casa nelle Cinqueterre, lo riempie di barattoli di pesto fatto in casa con il basilico del suo orto, e lui lo condivide volentieri con te. Giuseppe ti ha invitato domenica prossima a un pranzo a base di pasta al pesto assieme a Carlo, un altro amico. Carlo però ti ha chiamato perplesso: gli è giunta voce che il basilico è tossico e non sa come comportarsi in vista del pranzo. Inoltre, è preoccupato per la salute di Giuseppe, che mangia pesto almeno una volta al giorno. Cosa consigli di fare? Giuseppe dovrebbe preoccuparsi per la sua salute?
[DEU] Dein Freund Giuseppe kommt aus Italien und ist ein guter Esser: jedes Mal wenn Giuseppe nach Italien zurückkehrt, erhält er von seiner Grossmutter zahlreiche Gläser mit selbstgemachtem Pesto, dass sie mir ihrem eigenen Basilikum macht. Giuseppe hat dich und Carlo, einen anderen Freund, nächsten Sonntag zum Mittagessen eingeladen und es gibt Pasta mit Pesto. Carlo hat dich jedoch besorgt angerufen: er hat gehört, dass Basilikum giftig ist und er weiß nicht, wie er sich wegen der Einladung verhalten soll. Ausserdem, macht er sich Sorgen um Giuseppes Gesundheit, denn Giuseppe isst mindestens einmal pro Tag Pesto. Was rätst du ihm zu tun? Und sollte sich Giuseppe um seine Gesundheit Sorgen machen?

[ENG] Your lifetime friend Simona has lived in Ticino since ever, although she has relatives in Finland. In these last months, she has expressed her intention to move to a country with a colder climate, in the area of the Scandinavian countries: Simona fears that the general increase in temperature, caused by climate change, will bring new infectious diseases to your latitudes. Why spending your life in a warm place, with a higher probability of being constantly threatened by new tropical diseases? On one side, Simona is worried about her health, but on the other she does not want to leave the place where she is born and her friends. Do you think her fears are reasonable?
[ITA] La tua amica di infanzia Simona vive in Ticino da sempre, anche se ha dei parenti in Finlandia. Negli scorsi mesi, ha manifestato l’intenzione di trasferirsi in un paese dal clima più freddo, nella zona dei paesi scandinavi: teme infatti che l’aumento generalizzato delle temperature, causato dal cambiamento climatico, porterà nuove malattie infettive fino alle vostre latitudini. Perché vivere in un luogo caldo, con una maggior probabilità di essere continuamente minacciati dall’arrivo di nuove malattie tropicali? Simona è preoccupata per la sua salute, ma d’altro canto non vuole lasciare il posto dove è nata e cresciuta e i suoi amici. Pensi che le sue paure siano ragionevoli?
[DEU] Deine Jugendfreundin Simona hat immer im Tessin gelebt, obwohl sie Verwandte in Finnland hat. In den letzten Monaten hat sie oft davon gesprochen, in ein kälteres, skandinavisches Land umzuziehen. Sie fürchtet, dass der Klimawandel und der Anstieg der Temperaturen neue Infektionskrankheiten in eure Breitengrade bringen wird. Warum sollte man an einem warmen Ort leben, wo die Wahrscheinlichkeit hoch ist, dass man ständig durch neue Tropenkrankheiten bedroht wird? Einerseits macht sich Simona Sorgen um ihre Gesundheit, andererseits will sie ihre Heimat, wo sie geboren und gewachsen ist – und auch ihre Freunde – nicht verlassen. Denkst du, dass ihre Ängste berechtigt sind?
